Enabling Sustainable Agriculture Innovation in Ethiopia

TheCentre for Global Equality (CGE)evolves innovative solutions to global challenges.Bringing together collaborators from civil society, academia, government and business, we mobilise intellectual, financial and social resources and focus these on the interests of the four billion people in the world who live on less than $4 a day.We have developed an approach we call Inclusive Innovation, which is inclusive in purpose and approach. We mobilise frontier science and technology to enhance the wellbeing and economic development of the poorer half of the world’s population, without harming the environment or the interests of future generations. All potential solutions are co-created with the people they are intended to benefit.

Workshop on Enabling Sustainable Agriculture Innovation in Ethiopia

Over the past 70 years global agriculture has benefited significantly from innovation in chemistry, engineering and computer science, as well as from breeding and plant sciences. However, such advances have also caused challenges that need to be addressed: agricultural production must become more sustainable, protective of farm diversity and the environment, and be adaptable to climate change. Also, countries like Ethiopia need to benefit more from such innovation than they have in the past. Improvement in crop agronomic performance is critical to ensuring food and income security in Ethiopia, where 80% of the population are dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods.Sustainable, context-appropriate agri-innovation requires new, highly collaborative and multi-disciplinary ideas to be put forward, tested and applied. This also requires the building of a community of Ethiopian innovators who understand the challenges faced by Ethiopian small-holder farmers, and are equipped to address these in a context appropriate manner.Bahir Dar University (Bahir Dar, Ethiopia) is collaborating with NIAB and the Centre for Global Equality (Cambridge, UK) to build such a community of innovators through a Workshop and a Makeathon. This initiative will be launched on 26 July with an online workshop in which guest speakers from the UK, Italy and Ethiopia will explore opportunities and challenges in identifying key technologies for optimisation of crop productivity in farmers’ fields.The Workshop will be followed by a Makeathon for students, researchers and innovators in Bahir Dar. Participants will work on agri-tech solutions to support sustainable intensification, increase agricultural yields, and enhanced incomes for small holder farmers. The innovations will be co-created with farmers using Human Centred Design approaches.
