Lost your rhythm over winter? Your waistline is ready to defrost.
You've been bundled up, tired af , and moving through life on autopilot. But spring is here, and your body is ready to wake up.
Join us at Unlock Your Waistline | Afro Caribbean Whining Workshop a one-hour movement experience that takes you back to the roots of where the wine was born, and gives you the technique, the space, and full permission to let your body lead.
Hosted at The Manor, Studio 3 in London on Saturday 21st March 2026,
2:00 PM – 3:00 PM right at the heart of International Women's Month.
WHERE DOES WHINING COME FROM?
Whining as a movement form has its deepest roots in West Africa. One of its most direct ancestral lineages traces back to Mapouka — a traditional ceremonial dance originating from the Dabou region of Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), practised by the Aizi, Alladian, and Avikam peoples of the south-eastern coast for centuries.
Known as "la danse du fessier" — the dance of the behind — Mapouka was originally performed by women during rituals of fertility, celebration, and community. It was never just movement. It was an expression of feminine power, rooted in the earth and the body. That tradition travelled through the African diaspora, through the Caribbean, and evolved into the wining culture we carry today.
When you move in this class, you are not just dancing. You are touching something ancient.
WHAT MUSIC WILL WE BE MOVING TO?
This workshop is a full musical journey through the Afro Caribbean soundscape from the pulse of West Africa to the islands and back. Expect to move to:
Kompa — the smooth, sensual Haitian dance music born in the 1950s, designed to make your hips move before your mind catches up.
Soca — the soul of calypso, born in Trinidad and Tobago, high-energy and built entirely for bodies in motion.
Dancehall — Jamaica's bold, bass-driven rhythm that gave the world some of its most iconic wining moments.
Afrobeats — the contemporary West African sound that has taken carnival floors and global stages by storm.
Zouk — the slow, sensual groove from Guadeloupe and Martinique that strips movement back to pure hip connection.
Mapouka — the ancient Ivorian ceremonial rhythm at the ancestral root of it all, brought back to life in this class through Sophia's firsthand experience learning it at source in Côte d'Ivoire.
YOUR INSTRUCTOR: SOPHIA (@esperancexo)
This workshop is led by Sophia, a London-based Afro Caribbean movement instructor and Twerk After Work™ certified instructor whose connection to this tradition runs deep.
Sophia spent Christmas 2025 in her homeland, Côte d'Ivoire, immersing herself in the country's living dance culture — studying its movement traditions at source and bringing that embodied knowledge back to London.
Her classes are technically grounded, culturally rich, and genuinely transformative. Sophia teaches whining not as performance but as practice — a structured, intentional form of movement that develops pelvic control, hip mobility, core strength, and deep body awareness.
This is not a vibe class. This is a skill class that also happens to feel like coming home.

✨ THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR YOU IF:
You've been grinding through winter and your body is begging you to slow down and actually feel something. You grew up around Caribbean or West African dance culture and want to reconnect with it properly — with real technique, not just vibes. You've always wanted to learn to wine your waist but never felt confident enough to start. You want movement that builds genuine strength and confidence, not movement that punishes you. You're done with fitness that makes you feel like you're not enough, and ready for a space that celebrates exactly what you are. You want to mark Women's Month doing something that actually nourishes you.
No experience needed. All bodies. All levels. All backgrounds.
🔥 WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
This is structured movement with intention. In one hour, Sophia will guide you through:
The foundational mechanics of Caribbean whining — hip isolation, pelvic control, and rhythmic flow rooted in West African movement tradition. How to wine your waist with confidence and control, not just instinct. Core and lower body conditioning that supports the movement safely. The cultural context of what you're dancing — because knowing where movement comes from changes how it feels in your body. How to carry that energy beyond the studio and into your everyday life.
