Life in Ruins: The Fetishisation of Decay In Contemporary Architecture

The Architecture Space and Society Centre (ASSC) was launched in March 2015. Based in Birkbeck’s School of Arts, it provides a focus for the research activities taking place within Birkbeck and beyond in the area of architectural, design, and landscape history, contemporary architectural humanities and archaeology.

Many new buildings today don’t look so new at all, with their scuffed surfaces and carefully retained fragments of older structures. These tendencies respond to increasingly pressing demands for sustainability, but are they anything more than superficial formal strategies?ASSC member Tom Wilkinson is currently History Editor at The Architectural Review, where he has worked since 2012, and a Lecturer in History of Architecture at Birkbeck, UoL. He has previously been a lecturer at the Courtauld Institute and a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the Warburg Institute. He has a PhD in the history of art from UCL, London. Tom is co-founder and co-director of New Architecture Writers, a programme for young people of colour. He has written for the Guardian, Domus, Tribune, Apollo, and the Architect’s Journal, among others.
