I run both beginner and advanced map-reading courses. Whether you're just getting started or want to level up your nav skills, there's something for you. I'm a qualified map-reading instructor through my military career, where I train and assess soldiers.

<p>The NNAS Bronze Navigator Award is a comprehensive two-day training program designed for individuals with limited navigation experience. </p><p>This practical course provides learners with the skills necessary to plan and execute hikes in the countryside using paths, tracks, and other linear features. Upon successful completion, participants will earn the Bronze level award from the National Navigation Award Scheme. </p><p>Led by seasoned professionals, this workshop will equip learners with essential techniques to navigate trails with confidence and ease.</p><h3>Location</h3><p><em><strong>Camer Park - North Kent</strong></em></p><p>Nestled in the serene village of Meopham, North Kent, Camer Park offers 40 acres of lush woodland, open spaces, and mature parkland, providing the perfect backdrop for a day of outdoor learning. </p><p>Participants will embark on a scenic walk through the surrounding English countryside, which has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Ample amenities are available on-site, including a free car park, public toilets, and a highly popular café. </p><p>For those travelling by public transportation, the Sole Street train station is conveniently located only a 13-minute walk away, with easy links to Kent and London Victoria.</p><h3>The Guide</h3><p><em><strong>Aaron Mitchell</strong></em></p><ul><li>A highly experienced outdoor skills instructor with a British military background.</li><li>Holds qualifications as a Mountain Leader and Military Land Navigation Instructor.</li><li>F﻿ull member of the Mountain Training Association.</li><li>Also works as a tutor for the prestigious National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS).</li><li>Years of extensive experience in outdoor pursuits across the UK and international destinations.</li></ul><h3>What to bring:</h3><ul><li>Waterproofs</li><li>Spare warm top</li><li>Small backpack to carry your items</li><li>Suitable footwear for trail walking</li><li>Sunscreen</li><li>Hat</li><li>Lunch and snacks</li><li>Water (Enough for the duration of the day)</li><li>Hot flask for tea/coffee</li><li>Sense of humour</li><li>(A map and compass will be supplied for the course)</li></ul><h3>Requirements</h3><ul><li>Must be capable of walking up to 15km each day across undulating terrain.</li><li>Be able to comfortably carry your supplies for a day out walking.</li><li>You should be prepared for inclement weather conditions as this course takes place outdoors.</li></ul><h3>Itinerary</h3><p><em><strong>The Bronze Navigator Award Syllabus.</strong></em></p><ul><li>Navigate using a variety of maps and scales</li><li>Use 4 and 6-figure grid references with worded descriptions to define the position of a map feature and to locate a feature on the ground</li><li>Orientate the map using handrails, obvious point features and major landforms</li><li>Use linear features (e.g. paths, tracks, clear boundaries) as handrails in simple navigation exercises</li><li>Relate prominent landforms such as large hills and valleys to corresponding contour information on the map</li><li>Orientate the map by aligning a compass needle against grid north and be aware that magnetic variation causes an inaccuracy</li><li>Use an orientated map to confirm the direction of travel</li><li>Use clearly identifiable features to confirm position along the route and to recognise when the target has been overshot</li><li>Measure horizontal distance on the map and estimate distance on the ground using timing, pacing and simple visual judgements e.g.100m</li><li>Plan and implement simple routes and navigation strategies based on the above skills</li><li>Recognise a navigation error within a few minutes and apply simple relocation techniques using handrails and prominent features</li><li>Be aware of the use of mobile phone location apps as a backup to map and compass and in emergencies</li><li>Demonstrate an awareness of local and national access issues, access legislation, personal responsibilities, the Countryside Code and sustainability</li><li>Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of walking equipment, safety equipment and emergency procedures.</li></ul><p>This course provides an enjoyable and enriching learning opportunity, designed to enhance participants' map reading abilities and increase their confidence in this vital outdoor skill.</p>
