Planet Earth is home to more than 20,000 different species of bee - as diverse in size and appearance as they are in behaviour, life-cycles, and habitat requirements. Around 280 of these bee species can be found in Britain & Ireland.
Over the course of this day, you will learn about the differences between honeybees, bumblebees, solitary bees , and 'bee mimics' - including their life-cycles & behaviour; roles as pollinators; and their fascinating relationships with flowering plants. The day will also cover the causes of bee decline, and, most importantly, advise how we can all play our parts in reversing this decline, by creating more pollinator-friendly gardens and habitats.
There will be mid-morning and afternoon breaks (during which time you can sample some of Kasumi's delicious home-made cakes) plus an hour for (bring your own)lunch. If the weather is kind, we will end the day with a 'bee walk' in the park adjacent to the hall.
A list of suggested further reading & useful resources will be available on the day, but please bring a notepad and pen if you would like to take notes.
Locally grown bee-friendly plants will be for sale, as will signed copies of Brigit's book, Dancing with Bees
We won't be covering 'beekeeping' in any depth, but Natural Beekeeper, Rob Howard, will be on hand during the breaks for anyone who has questions about keeping bees.
Brigit, Becky, Kasumi , and Rob look forward very much to seeing you on 18th May!
