Walk from Buttermere to Biscuit Hill and Around the Lake Back to the Bridge Inn

Starting from the picturesque village of Buttermere, this walk offers a delightful combination of rolling hills, woodland trails, and lakeside serenity. Begin your journey in the heart of Buttermere, where the scent of fresh air and the sound of birdsong immediately set a peaceful tone. Depart early enough to give yourself time to enjoy the route and return to the Bridge Inn by 1 p.m.

The path toward Biscuit Hill gently ascends through a patchwork of farmland and pastures. Along the way, you’ll catch glimpses of the shimmering lake to your right, framed by the rugged peaks of Haystacks and Fleetwith Pike. The gradual climb opens up to expansive views as you approach Biscuit Hill, a small but charming rise that offers a perfect vantage point to take in the beauty of the surrounding countryside. Pause here to soak up the views—there’s a timeless tranquility in the contrast between the steep fells and the calm water below.

From Biscuit Hill, head downhill along a meandering trail that reconnects with Buttermere’s lakeside path. This section of the walk leads you through lush woodland, where dappled sunlight filters through the canopy of ancient oaks and birch trees. The lake, at times hidden by the trees, suddenly reappears in breathtaking, sparkling vistas.

The circular path takes you around the water’s edge, where the scenery alternates between quiet beaches and grassy clearings. You might spot wildlife like herons, ducks, or even red squirrels darting along the trail. As you near the village again, the distinct, inviting silhouette of the Bridge Inn comes into view.

Arriving back at the inn by 1 p.m. leaves just enough time for a hearty pub lunch. Whether you opt for a traditional Lakeland ale or a classic meal by the fire, this walk provides not just exercise and fresh air but a restorative connection to the natural beauty of Buttermere.
