We are pleased to invite a range of external speakers as well as the UCL editors to discuss a variety of topics. Our programme is:
· Welcome Susan Irvine will introduce our conference with reflections on the projects and our intentions for this conference and beyond.
· Adventures in Editing explores the philosophical dilemmas, practical conundrums, temptations to compromise, and uncooperative collaborators. Philip Horne is joined by Tim Lustig and Jenny Richards.
· Editing and Criticism considers the intertangled relationship between the two disciplines and will discuss all aspects of the relationship whether hostile or mutually beneficial. Gillian Wright is joined by Oliver Herford, Cathy Shrank, and Winfried Rudolf.
Lunch
· The Psychology of Editing / Editorial Pathologies: Seen as a cooly rational activity, editing is often curiously emotional and obsessive. Individual editors will compare notes on the psychological experience of editing, and on the psychologies of editors, living and dead. Is there such a thing as an editorial character? Paul Davis is joined by Gregory Dart, and Felicity James.
· Editing and Audience / Editions and Readers: This panel examines the way that perceived audiences influence the editorial process – who is the edition for? How have editors had to, or might they have to, modify texts to take account of contemporary sensibilities and cultural norms; editing for the disabled; the impact of dialogues between editions and their audiences. Chris Stamatakis is joined by Simon Thomson, Henry Power, and Samantha Matthews.
· Round table We end our conference with a lively roundtable chaired by John Mullan and including Orla Schätzlein, Rene Weiss and others. The audience will be invited to take an active part in the discussion.
Drinks Reception You are warmly invited to continue the conversation in the nearby UCL Japanese Garden.
