About this course

Alan Turing is celebrated for his role in the breaking of wartime cyphers, but in his short lifetime he made so many more important breakthroughs in mathematics, computing and even biology. This course will describe Turing’s life and work before and after World War II and the lasting impact that his work had, particularly in the field of computer science.

What will be covered on the course?

  • The Turing family and its history
  • Alan’s formative years at Sherbourne School and Cambridge University
  • His major breakthrough in the mathematics of logic –The Turing Machine
  • Postwar work developing the NPL ACE and Manchester “Baby” computers.
  • “Turing Patterns” – mathematics and biology
  • The circumstances of his death

Please note: Turing’s wartime work at Bletchley Park is covered in the companion course “Bletchley Codebreakers”
