Alice's Day

Alice’s Day 2025, the annual city-wide celebration of all things Alice in Wonderland, is on Saturday 5th July.

It is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in July, in commemoration of the afternoon on the 4th July 1862 when the Christ Church mathematician Charles Dodgson took the Dean of Christ Church’s daughters (Lorina, Alice, and Edith Liddell) on a boat trip, from Folly Bridge to Godstow, where they had a picnic.

There, they begged him to tell her a story, so he invented tales of a girl called Alice who had fantastical adventures. He wrote this up for her in a fine manuscript entitled Alice’s Adventures Under Ground in 1864 and published an expanded version as Alice in Wonderland in 1865, under the pen name Lewis Carroll, with illustrations by John Tenniel.

Shop Activities

We're expecting a special visit from the White Rabbit (however, he is notorious for being late and difficult to catch when he does arrive) See if you can spot him in the shop and on Broad Street.

We'll also be welcoming author Anna James for a book signing of her latest book, 'Alice with a Y' at 11:30am and Alice themed activites throughout the day.

It's free to register and attend the signing and take part in shop activities. This celebration is jointly hosted by Blackwell's Oxford and Waterstone's Oxford.
