Altan, formed in 1985, celebrates its 40th anniversary with a special concert, honouring its roots in Donegal’s rich musical tradition. The band’s journey began when Belfast-born flutist Frankie Kennedy met fiddler and singer Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, leading to a musical partnership that brought Donegal's unique sound to the world.

Over the years, Altan's lineup grew with the addition of bouzouki player Ciaran Curran, guitarist Mark Kelly, and others, including accordionist Dermot Byrne and fiddle virtuoso Paul O'Shaughnessy. In 2013, accordionist Martin Tourish, a Donegal native and composer, joined the group, adding a fresh energy and further connection to the band's homeland.

Their 1993 album Island Angel was a global success, and they performed for US presidents, including Bill Clinton, as well as accompanied Irish Presidents on state visits.

In 1994, tragedy struck with Frankie Kennedy's untimely death, but his legacy remains central to the band. Altan’s extensive touring continued, including collaborations with artists like Dolly Parton and recording albums such as The Widening Gyre in 2013, which explored connections between Irish and Bluegrass music.

The band received numerous honours, including a 2006 Irish government postal stamp and a 2017 TG4 Gradaim Ceoil award for Mairéad.

Their 2023 album The Gap of Dreams connects their music to Donegal folklore, and their latest album, Donegal, further celebrates the county’s musical heritage, reflecting the band's enduring love for their roots. Recently, Claire Friel joined as the newest member, bringing her unique talent to Altan’s evolving sound. The band continues to inspire audiences worldwide with its rich heritage and dynamic performances.
