Dr Marco Romeo-Pitone

Jarrow Hall Anglo-Saxon Farm, Village and Bede Museum

The small town of Jarrow, in South Tyneside, has always attracted the attention of historians and archaeologists for its famous connections with the Venerable Bede and the Golden Age of Northumbria.

More than 60 years ago, after having carried out archaeological investigations around the Saxon church of St. Peter in Monkwearmouth, Dame Professor Rosemary Cramp (Durham University) started the excavation of the site at St. Paul’s Church in Jarrow, where the remains of some walls belonging to the old monastery are still standing. Between 1963 and 1978, Cramp’s team uncovered the vast majority of the Anglo-Saxon buildings, the cemetery and the medieval structures related to Jarrow monastery.

This talk wants to offer a brief overview of the archaeological evidence found in Jarrow, following the history of the excavations and exploring what opportunities the site offers to archaeologists and the public today.
