About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours 45 minutes

Attachment theory, developed by John Bowlby and later expanded by Mary Ainsworth, is a psychological, evolutionary, and ethological theory that examines the importance of "attachment" in regard to personal development. Its primary focus is on attachment style and relationships, especially with others, particularly in long-term relationships, between parents, care givers, children, and romantic relationships.

Who is the workshop for?

This workshop is for IPT Accredited Practitioners only

During our workshops, you will briefly reflect on the research and evidence of Attachment Theory. How attachment theory posits that the quality of early attachment in relationships has profound implications for later development, influencing emotional regulation, social relationships, and even mental health.

Key concepts of Attachment Theory.

Attachment Behaviours

  • Attachment is an emotional bond that typically forms between an infant and their primary caregiver, providing the child with a sense of security and protection.
  • Behaviours like crying, clinging, and seeking proximity to the caregiver are seen as innate mechanisms to ensure the child's survival.

Internal Working Models:

  • These are mental representations of the self and others that guide an individual's expectations and interactions in relationships throughout life.
  • Formed in early childhood, these models influence how one perceives and responds to others in relationships.

Attachment Styles:

  • Secure Attachment: Characterized by trust and a sense of safety in relationships. Individuals are comfortable with intimacy and independence.
  • Avoidant Attachment: Marked by a tendency to avoid closeness and emotional connection. Individuals may seem independent and self-reliant.
  • Ambivalent/Anxious Attachment: Characterized by anxiety and uncertainty in relationships. Individuals often seek closeness but fear abandonment.
  • Disorganized Attachment: A mix of behaviors that can seem erratic. Often associated with fear and confusion in relationships, it may result from trauma or inconsistent caregiving.
