Slow Hiking

Event Location: Passo Lanciano (CH)

Join us for a relaxing morning of walking slowly together in the shade of this ancient pine forest high up on the mountainside of the Mother Maiella.

We'll be walking a 10km circular route which takes us through the forest and up onto the plains where we will be stepping back in time to a rural way of peasant life as we walk past a number of well preserved tholos (ancient round stone shepherd’s dwellings). We will also enjoy some spectacular views to the Apennines mountain ranges of Abruzzo, as well as having the time to enjoy the diversity of flowers, plants, mosses and ferns, maybe even some wildlife watching too if we are lucky.

This walk has been designed to facilitate full immersion in the beauty of nature and our spectacular surroundings by taking our time, having quiet, contemplative moments, and switching off from technology. This is an opportunity suitable for regular walkers looking to unwind, enjoy the fresh air and history, and connect with a small group of like-minded individuals exploring the landscape of Abruzzo together. Conducted mainly in the English language these walks are perfect for anyone wishing to practice the language within a safe and caring environment.

All our timings and distances covered in these slow hikes are approximate so we can tailor-make each session depending on the needs of the group and the opportunities we encounter along the way. There will be hills to climb, and uneven ground to cover, but we will also take the time to sit, to look, and to just listen.

NB: Please note that due to the unpredictable nature of the weather and conditions in this mountainous region, we may have to change the location of the event (or postpone) if we consider the conditions to be detrimental to your safety, comfort and enjoyment.

We are Jacqui and Kevin Price, a husband and wife team, and have been running our small eco-campsite retreat in the Maiella National Park of Abruzzo since 2012. From our personal explorations and as hiking guides, we have a wealth of experience and an intimate knowledge of these hills and mountains.

Jacqui is a Forest Bathing+ Guide, trained and certified by The Forest Bathing Institute (accredited by the Complementary Medical Association). She is deeply conversant with the science behind the practice of Forest Bathing, is a mindfulness and meditation guide, and a mental health first aider. These combined skills and knowledge ensures that all our locations and programmes, will have been carefully selected and planned to provide the maximum benefits, to both mind and body, for all our participants.

Whichever session you join us on, you will be introduced to some truly beautiful parts of this still wild and untainted natural landscape within the Apennines of Abruzzo. Our aim is to gradually slow you right down, bringing your focus into your surroundings in such a way that you develop a deeper connection with nature. Focusing on nature in this way allows the mind to settle into stillness and the body to be at peace and to rest. Our groups are small, to a maximum of 10 participants, which means each person can enjoy their own space, or connect with others as they wish, forging friendships and sharing experiences.
