About this event

  • Event lasts 1 day 7 hours

Short Description:

This 2-day (weekend) workshop aims to support therapists working one-to-one with clients. It provides a simple model for including the body and somatic awareness in the therapeutic relationship. There’s some background theory, plus a range of techniques and interventions that can be applied immediately and effectively in the therapy space. Threads of trauma, mindfulness and self-regulation run through the material. It’s a creative and experimental approach which can bring fresh energy to therapeutic encounters.

Topics covered:

Key theory and experiential understanding on how and why body-centred techniques work, plus ‘bodylistening’ skills to help you contact and work directly with the body – your client’s and your own.

  • Theoretical background: Neo-Reichian body psychotherapy, attachment theory and the development of character.
  • The Bodylistening model: A simple framework to help you include the body in the therapy space.
  • Body dialogue and process: How to talk to the body and encourage its responses. Body-gestalt techniques.
  • Working with channels: Using the channels of Image, Movement, Breath, Emotion, Sensation, Thought.
  • Trauma: Working with body-held trauma. Understanding trauma as a response to overwhelm, and how to work creatively without causing retraumatisation.
  • The body in relationship: Embodied-Relational approaches to therapy – how bodies relate in a client-therapist environment. Listening to my own body.

Target Audience:

This workshop is open to trainee counsellors, qualified counsellors and psychotherapists and other therapists working in the overlapping fields of physical, emotional and psychological health
