Who is this course for?

This course is for people working in the healthcare sector who wish to train other professionals or students in critical appraisal skills.

If you are a beginner or unconfident at critical appraisal then you will need to have completed CASP’s online modules to give yourself a good grounding in critical appraisal skills. During this course you will not be trained in the basics of doing a critical appraisal but will be given the skills to increase your confidence when training others. The course will focus on improving skills to train others when appraising systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials (RCTs).

You will be provided with skills and resources to take back to your area of work and organisation.

How will this course be run?:

The course will include a mix of preparatory reading, presentations, briefings, small group work and time to practice teaching to the whole group. Numbers will be kept low for optimum interaction between trainer and participants. Our courses are also a good opportunity to network and learn from others attending, involved in disseminating healthcare information, including participants & trainers and facilitators.

The cost includes all workshop materials and certification, and includes daily refreshments at the venue with 3 course hot or cold buffet lunch served in the shared dining room.

Transport and accommodation are not included, and will have to be arranged by you. We are happy to help if you need advice on where best to stay, local transport etc, just give us an email.

Everyone wants good health and wellbeing, and healthcare that is effective. But how can we know whether the claims made for an intervention are valid? Some interventions are given with the best of intentions but have later been found to be ineffective with the potential for harm and wasted resources.

Critical appraisal skills enable you to systematically assess the trustworthiness and relevance of results in published research. The Critical Appraisals Skills Programme (CASP) has 29 years of expertise in the delivery of training and skills development to healthcare and other professionals.

The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) was developed in Oxford in 1993. Over the years, it has contributed to increasing the knowledge and developing skills of health professionals in the use of evidence-based approaches to health and social care in the UK. CASP workshops and resources help participants put knowledge into practice by learning how to formulate questions systematically, to find research evidence, to appraise research evidence, and to act on what they find. CASP offers critical appraisal skills training, workshops, and tools. These help you evaluate health and care related research for trustworthiness, results, and relevance.
