About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Terroir is magic. Two vines grown a stones throw apart can produce entirely different wines and from time immemorial those special sites whose wines stand apart have been prized by producers and consumers alike. Over time, elaborate systems of classification have grown up both to protect famous names from imitation and to advertise the pedigree of these noble wines.

The best-known classifications are in France, with Burgundy's the most detailed and Bordeaux's set in aspic since 1855, as well as less well-known classifications such as Champagne, Cotes de Provence, and the sweet wines of the Loire, but the oldest in Europe is Tokaj in Hungary. Even now the urge to classify endures and groups like the VDP in Germany and Vinea Wachau in Austria are eagerly reviving the practice and Langton's Australian classification has established itself as a reference point.

Tonight we will unpick the jargon of the Grand Cru and initiate you into the full cadastral map of classified wines and the special sites they come from, from Champagne to Claret, Tokaj to Barossa.

Our shop tastings start at 7.30pm and run for approximately one-and-a-half to two hours. We will taste 6-8 wines on a theme, and bread, cheese and charcuterie is provided to match with the wines. Due to the communal nature of the tasting, we are unable to cater for dietary requirements.
