Study session: Art and Culture Towards Liberation
Part of the Creatives of Colour Festival, May 8-10, 2025.
This event is open to BPOC only.
In this session we will think about Ghassan Kanafani’s writings on the role of art and culture in anti-imperialist struggle.
Ghassan Kanafani, born 1936, martyred 1972, Beirut, was a Palestinian art-teacher, novelist, sculptor, literary critic, newspaper editor and historian, but above all he was a revolutionary political actor and spokesperson for the PFLP - the Marxist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. His writings, such as On Zionist Literature, excavate the history of Zionism’s pioneering use of culture and literary fiction in the development of political Zionism in Palestine.
Hussein Mitha is a writer and artist who lives in Glasgow. They have a diverse practice that spans community arts, education, literary study and mural-making.
Creatives of Colour Festival
This event centers the voices, experiences, and creativity of people of colour in Glasgow, sharing amongst our larger community. Storytelling sits at the heart of these creative practices, and celebrates the resilience, joy, and talent of PoC artists.
Our stories. Our lens. Our terms.
This event is presented by ‘Thinking Culture’, a cultural programme from the School of Culture & Creative Arts, University of Glasgow
