About this event

How it works:

  • Wear something comfy, bring a bottle of water or whatever you would drink if you were going to the gym.
  • Find a spot you are happy to be in within the spacious hall.
  • The lights will get dimmed as low as they go, windows blacked out - your eyes will adjust gradually
  • Then the music starts and you dance or move however you want.
  • No need to talk to anyone else, it's a time to dance independently in the company of others.
  • This isn't a social event whilst the music is on - dance now talk later.
  • It's a chance for you to lose yourself, your way, to some great music. It's not about technique, or being a good dancer. It's about the experience of dancing with no one watching and the joy that brings.
  • The music stops, the lights go up and you can be back home not too late on a Monday night. Feeling happy, relaxed and like you've done something just for you.
  • This is not a club night. No booze. No drugs.
  • E ach night's playlist is usually between 45-55 minutes long.
  • On most Mondays with the exception of some school school holidays and bank holidays.

“What do James Brown, Basement Jaxx, Donna Summer, The Chemical Brothers and NWA have in common? They all appear on the playlists at Dancing in the Dark, my new favourite way to spend my Monday evenings. I love the old skool vibes of the location, the space to swirl and twirl and shimmy, and the eclectic playlists of such a mix of old and new, funk and dance, reggae and hip hop”. Lizzie Curren

"It's weird but I come out feeling relaxed, yet alert - not many activities do that" . Rick

Who is it for?:

Anyone, regardless of your music tastes or dancing style. We play music from the ages, that is danceable, both popular western and music from other cultures. We try and vary the beat and pace, and you will have heard some of what we play but probably not all.

Who makes the playlist?:

Rick and Lucy alternate weeks.

There will be some tunes that you can sing along to, and some that you might never have heard before. African and latin rhythms and jazz regularly appear as will other world music genres. Plus a tasty serving of electronica most sessions.

We share the playlists every week via a WhatsApp group.

Where is Dancing in the Dark held?:

At the All Saints Centre, Friars Walk, Lewes BN7 2LE. Near the depot cinema and the railway station.

There is plenty of space to keep your bike safely indoors and here is information on where to park nearby:

Frairs Walk car park is the closest spot at the back of Premier Inn and is free after 5pm.

Please turn up 5 minutes in advance to start the class at 8pm

Frequently asked questions

What's the point ?

Dancing in the dark is ideal for those who just want to"loose themselves " in the music. No real sense of performance or distraction of watching others and / or comparing yourself with them. There is something pure about it !
