Presenters
Lisl Lewis, GeotherEx (SLB)
Lisl Lewis has spent 28 years in the applied earth sciences across different sectors of the energy industry. She started with an exploration geophysics field crew for mining and geothermal clients in North America, then moved into experimental research and commercialisation of marine electromagnetic technology. Lisl was the offshore Party Chief and then Operations Manager for a start-up company in California before turning back towards research and instrumentation after her company was acquired by Schlumberger (now SLB). She then worked in the training department of SLB at the corporate level for over a decade before circling back to her roots in applied geoscience in 2022, and is now doing geothermal consulting project work for GeothermEx (part of SLB) based in Sussex, England. Lisl holds an M.Sc. in Geophysics from San Diego State University and a B.Sc. in Geology and Geophysics from University of California, Santa Barbara and University of Leeds.
Eren Gunuc, London Geothermal Ltd.
Eren Gunuc is a London-based geothermal energy expert, Founder of London Geothermal Ltd, and Managing Partner at Qbivio UK Energy Limited—a pioneering Micro ORC company focused on unlocking the geothermal power potential of low-enthalpy heat sources in the UK.
He currently serves as a Non-Executive Director at the Geothermal Energy Advancement Association (GEAA) and as a Global Operations Team Member at Women in Geothermal (WING Global), where he advocates for inclusive leadership and international collaboration in the renewable energy sector.
Eren graduated with a degree in Geophysical Engineering in 2008 from Izmir Dokuz Eylul University and has since become a globally recognized expert in the geothermal energy field. Prior to founding his companies, he spent six years at Arup’s London office as a geothermal specialist, working on multidisciplinary projects at the intersection of engineering, infrastructure, and the energy transition. His experience spans deep geothermal systems, ground-source heat pumps (GSHP), geoscience, project development, investment strategy, and energy policy. His professional portfolio includes over 200 geothermal projects, due diligence on more than 2,000 energy assets, and strategic energy planning for international infrastructure programs.
Talk outline
The UK is a hotbed of geothermal possibilities but has yet to gain the traction that our European neighbours have with utilising geothermal energy to decarbonise heating and infrastructure. However, the past couple of years has seen flurried activity across the British Isles that may indicate change is on the way.
Join Lisl Lewis from GeothermEx (SLB) and Eren Gunuc from London Geothermal Ltd to hear some updates about geothermal development in the UK, including the introduction of some technology that can be applied with surprising implications for utilising geothermal energy.
