About EL*C

The Eurocentralasian Lesbian* Community (EL*C) is a lesbian feminist and intersectional network. The EL*C started out of a self-organised space in 2016, recognizing the multitude of needs surrounding the rights, the visibility and the well-being of lesbians throughout Europe and Central Asia. In 2024, EL*C has over 1000 individual members and 160 NGO/group members. We work to strengthen our community, to make lesbian issues visible to those in power, to build and find together the strategies, the resources and the tools to resist violence and discrimination against lesbians.

This upcoming conference will be a gathering to celebrate the strength and unity of our community, to foster a spirit of solidarity and activism, leaving participants inspired to continue the struggle for lesbian rights.

Attendees may expect a program filled with lesbian activism, feminist discourse, and ample opportunities to connect with fellow human rights defenders and other members of the community. Whether you are a seasoned activist or just excited about the lesbian communities all around the world, you will find a supportive and dynamic community ready to embrace you. We are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment. Our conference is trans-inclusive and open to all who share our passion for advancing lesbian rights.

Our conferences are our lighthouses – In 2017, we organised our conference entitled “Lesbians in Europe: Act, Reflect, Transform, Connect” in Vienna Austria and in 2019, we held our second international conference entitled “Let’s Bring Lesbian Genius to the World!” in Kyiv, Ukraine. In 2022 we organized our third conference in Budapest, Hungary. The first one in Vienna, Austria, with 500 participants. The second in Kyiv, Ukraine, with 350 participants, the third with 450 participants. The first edition brought together five hundred lesbian politicians, artists, journalists, academics gathered from all over Europe and Central Asia for a very successful, historical and mediatized event. In Vienna, the conference participants made it clear that there was a huge need for all European and Central Asian countries to pay more attention to the situation of lesbians. We also heard the message from thousands of lesbians in Europe and Central Asia: they wanted a network and another conference to happen. The second edition of the conference took place in April 2019, in Kiev, Ukraine, and was co-organised with Insight, a Ukrainian human rights NGO focusing on LGBTIQ rights work. At the second EL*C conference, Central Asia was included in the official name of the network. The 2022 Budapest conference was organized to support the local lesbian and feminist mouvements in their struggles against the Victor Orban authoritarian government. Our partners Labrisz and qLit helped the EL*C team to made this conference and the Dykemarch in the street of Budapest a great succes.

Overall, our conferences have served as a key moment to measure the pulse of the lesbian movement, to support and celebrate the lesbian community, to foster or strenghen new projects and connections, and to serve as a base to develop strategies for growth and sustainability.
