About this event

  • Event lasts 5 hours

On day 8 we start at lovely Elie Ruby Bay and end in the quaint East Neuk village of Crail. This section is where you get to see Julie Brook’s Beach of Dream’s sculptural commission, ‘Tide Line’.

Your FCCT guides can show you points of geological, historical and wildlife interest. You can see Lady’s Tower, built for Lady Janet Anstruther as a summer house in the 1760s. Further on are the ruins of Ardross and Newark Castles and the stunning 14th century St Monans Church.

We’ll pass the restored St Monans Windmill, once used to pump seawater into the adjacent salt pans. The limestone beds here are rich in fossils. Pittenweem is Fife’s only working fishing harbour and is the site of a cave used by St Fillan in the 7th century.

Anstruther is noted for its award-winning fish and chips and Scottish Fisheries Museum. It is also home of Beach of Dreams member organisation, Anstruther Improvements Association and Gallery 495 Cellardyke Trust.

Caiplie Caves are a prominent weathered sandstone feature situated almost halfway between Cellardyke and Crail. The route continues past an old salt works before reaching Crail, a traditional fishing village with a 17th-century harbour.

This is the eighth day of our Beach of Dreams journey around the Fife coast. This section is sometimes narrow and steep with steps. There are 3 more stages that you can join in by either walking or cycling and each event is free of charge. See Eventbrite and the FCCT website for details and how to book.

Beach of Dreams

Beach of Dreams is a UK-wide coastal arts festival that explores the unique heritage, culture and climate future of our coastline. Fife Coast and Countryside Trust are delighted that Fife is the Scottish location for this creative programme. Presented by Kinetika, Beach of Dreams sees acclaimed and emerging artists commissioned UK-wide to create works to help local communities connect with the natural environment.

In Fife, artist Julie Brook will create a tidal sculpture from locally sourced materials, inspired by walks along the Fife coastline and talks with residents and artists. She will also lead workshops with local schools and community groups in partnership with ArtMovesFife.
