Join us on a friendly family bike ride and picnic as part of the 2025 Great Big Green Week!

We'll be following a beautiful 4km/2.5mile flat and traffic free route alongside the river. Starting from the Canoe Club we'll ride alongside Welshmill Woods, through Weylands and on to Whatcombe Fields. We'll then head back along the same path to finish at Welshmill play park. We'll stop for a picnic along the way, please bring your own food and drinks.

The route we'll be following has been created by volunteers at Frome's Missing Links and will eventually link up to the traffic free Colliers Way near Great Elm. Check out our route here.

This ride is suitable for all abilities and is aimed at adults wanting to build confidence riding with their young children whether they're in bike seats or trailers, or starting to ride their own bikes. Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult.

It is free to take part but numbers are limited so please book your free place. Please book a place for everyone attending in your group, adults and children.

This event has been made possible thanks to National Lottery funding and is part of Green and Healthy Frome, which offers support and activities to make choices that are good for your health and the health of the planet. To find out more and get involved go to www.greenhealthyfrome.org

Frequently asked questions

Can children join this ride?

Yes! All children MUST be accompanied by an adult who will be responsible for their child at all times. We will be cycling alongside the river which has no barrier in places so adults must remain vigilant at all times.

Can I use an ebike?

Yes! Please ensure your ebike complies with the law: electric assistance only applies up to 25kph/15.5mph; the motor is 250 Watts or less; the pedals must be in motion to start the motor assistance. More details here: www.cyclinguk.org/article/electric-cycles-and-law-what-you-need-know

Can I ride a cargo bike?

Yes, however we are heading into Whatcombe Fields through a couple of barriers so if you have a tall box style cargo bike you may need to check the dimensions first.

How do I know if my bike is roadworthy?

Before the ride check over your bike following an 'M check'. There's a great guide to an M check here: www.sustrans.org.uk/our-blog/get-active/mcheck/ plus we'll check over our bikes together before we set off.

Do I need to bring food and drinks?

Yes, please bring your own food, snacks and drinks.

Where will we stop for a picnic

We will stop on the way back either in Whatcombe Fields or in Welshmill Park.

Will we still cycle in the rain?

This depends on how wet it is. We will email everyone who has booked a place a few days before the the ride to confirm if there are any changes.

Do we need to wear helmets?

Adult helmet wearing is recommended, but not compulsory, however we ask that all children wear a helmet.

Do both adults and children need a bike?

Yes, everyone needs their own bike unless they are children in a bike seat, trailor, tag-a-long or cargo bike.

Who can I contact with any questions before joining a ride?

If you have any questions about our rides please contact Emma on emma@fromebikeproject.org
