Outline of the Workshop: The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the concept of literature searching through Healthcare Databases Advanced Search (HDAS) interface, to demonstrate some of the features of the healthcare databases and to offer basic skills required to search these databases.

This includes: Healthcare Databases- Searching Medical, Nursing, Psychological, Complementary and Allied Medicine, Health Administration and Health Management Databases with links to full-text articles of over 1500 journals.

Intended for: Staff who would like to gain basic skills to search for evidence-based literature.

Skills required: Basic PC and mouse skills.


Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session participants will have understood the following concepts:

  • The National Core Content (NCC), London and local top-ups
  • E-journals, e-books and how to login to the NCC
  • Databases on offer
  • Concept of literature searching
  • Basic searching across databases
  • Phrase searching and truncation
  • Using the combining operators i.e. OR, AND, NOT
  • Limiting your search results by date
  • Managing your results- printing, e-mailing and saving your selected references
  • Saving and rerunning search histories
  • Setting Alert
  • Troubleshooting
  • Ending your search

This course is free and open to all staff who have an interest in research (doctors, dentists, nurses, research assistants etc.) working in or associated with North and West London Trusts.
