About this event

“Dance as if nobody’s watching”

(Irish Proverb)

This class is about dancing as if nobody’s watching.

You do not need any experience in dance - only a desire to move your body and a willingness to explore - if you have a body then you are dancer already! This is a space to dance your dance, after all, if you don't do your dance who will?

Generally we begin classes with a warm-up to simply stretch your body and to allow yourself to relax into movement. You will then be guided through a 'wave' of music and movement, being guided by the 5Rhythms of the practice - Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness throughout which you have the opportunity to simply create your own dance movements.

Have you ever danced like nobody’s watching?

Danced with freedom, without a care in your mind?

What would that be like? How would that feel?

Whether or not you want to come to relax after a stressful week at work, or to shake it all out and let your hair loose, or simply to move and dance to your own rhythm, 5Rhythms dance and movement classes will definitely invigorate you.

See you on the dance-floor!

About Stuart

Stuart found 5Rhythms in 2007 and after completing the Teacher Training in 2018, he leads classes and workshops in the UK and Europe.

"Friday Beat led by 5 Rhythms teacher Stuart Philips is the best way to spend a Friday evening. This class has brought me so much joy through movement to the best selection of music and gentle verbal prompting. I’ve uncovered so many aspects of myself which I’ve taken into my everyday life , living in a much more authentic and self accepting way. I’ve grieved , celebrated and whooped with joy with my fellow dancers, in my own dance but connected to community through the beat . In the words of the late Maxi Jazz : This is my church. This is how I heal my hurt . God is a DJ ." ~ Diane, London

About 5Rhythms®

5Rhythms is a dynamic movement practice—a practice of being in your body—that ignites creativity, connection, and community.

Created by Gabrielle Roth and practiced by tens of thousands worldwide, 5Rhythms® is a philosophy, perspective, performance art and a dynamic movement practice rooted in the principle that if you put the psyche in motion it will heal itself. Movement is both the medicine and the metaphor, reaching across all languages, cultures and age groups to transform suffering into art, art into awareness and awareness into action. Wherever the 5 Rhythms are practiced, a community is born to dance, to sweat, the change, to support, and to provide a safe space for each of us to shatter the ego's hold and awaken the juicy, unpredictable, fascinating, edge walking, rock-star part of ourselves that yearns to be free.

Creativity. Connection. Community.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience or some minimum level of fitness?

No experience or level of fitness is required to begin your 5Rhythms practice.

I have/had an injury. Can I still do 5Rhythms?

The 5Rhythms is a simple and flexible practice that can be experienced by anyone regardless of their physical limitations. Because there is no specific “routine” to follow you will be able to participate at your own pace, within your own capacity to move.

What happens in a 5Rhythms class?

While every class is different, each class will provide basic instruction in the 5Rhythms, whether that is the full Wave (the 5Rhythms in sequence) or focusing on one or another of the rhythms and its energies.

What do I need to bring to a 5Rhythms class?

Dress comfortably in clothing that you don’t mind sweating in and allows you a full range of motion. You may want to bring something warm so you don’t get cold, and/or a small towel to dry off with. We dance bare-footed or in light-soled shoes. Bring a bottle of water and your curiosity.

What if I’m REALLY terrified (1/2)?

First of all remember that right on the other side of that terror there’s excitement. Take to heart that the 5Rhythms practice has the room for you to move with however you’re feeling. so there is nothing for you to “do” except move in whatever way feels right in the moment.

What if I’m REALLY terrified (2/2)?

You will not be the first person to be so terrified that you just barely made it over the threshold of the door. Once in the room I am going to encourage you to move to your full potential and I will also give you the space to move into your potential from wherever you are.

How much does it cost?

My classes cost what an average yoga class would cost. Check my individual class and workshop listings for the specific cost of the classes/workshops you are interested in attending. If this is your first time at this class, I offer a £10 trial ticket.

I want to find out more information and practice on my own, how do I do that?

Stuart first danced the 5Rhythms in 2007 and has been teaching since 2018. His teachings are practical and are rooted in inviting awareness to the physical body that we each inhabit. His work has been described as bringing clarity and simplicity to the practice of embodied movement...

"I am discovering for myself that a powerful aspect of the 5Rhythms is the practice of awakening the body that enables us human beings to unravel for ourselves who we truly are.

Having cut my dancing teeth tearing up the red dust of Goa’s legendary and untamed trance parties throughout the 1990s and with family life taking ascendance in the last decade with marriage and the subsequent arrival of two fantastic boys, my offerings are informed by the combined explorations of the apparent wildness of our edges and the seemingly ordinariness of day-to-day life and are driven by a commitment to ground this practice into the embodied consciousness of the present and future guardians of this planet - you, me and whoever's next - drawing on the wisdom of the sages, personal experience and the infinite simplicity of Gabrielle’s maps.

See you on the dance-floor!"

Stuart Phillips is an accredited 5RTA teacher and this workshop/class will count towards the 5Rhythms Training Path.
