Message from Tony Sharkey, CEO of the Football Transfer Forum
"I've been contemplating setting up an Agents Association for some time. The timing now seems to be about right.
Firstly, I have to commend and celebrate the work of the late Mel Stein who, as many of you know, set up the first ever football agents association in England. I was there at the first meetings held in London.
Mel worked really hard to give us a voice in the industry and a seat at the table. He is missed.
I'd like to pick up that baton and bring football agents together once again.
In my 22 years as a football agent you get used to change.
Right now we are all still reeling from FIFA's imposition of the FIFA Football Agent Regulation (FFAR) with no real consultation. Thankfully we have some clarity in England, but the picture is still blurred. We await the ECJ courts decision sometime in 2025.
The FA and the Employment Agency Standards (EAS) wrote to agents in July this year asking for views. We are yet to hear anything further.
Then we have the Independent Regulator Bill going through Parliament at the moment. How will this affect football agents?
You get the picture...
The good news is that if we stick together and organise as a strong group, we can present a united front to all these organisations. We can also advocate for football agents and challenge the long-held negative perception of agents. There are many people out there who just don't understand the role and our vital place in the football industry.
They need to be educated and informed.
Being an agent can be both challenging and isolating at times. The other major advantages of being part of the FTF Agents Association will be the advice, support, insights and networking available.
We are looking to build a team of experienced people who can help drive it forward.
So sign up for this meeting to find out more about all the benefits and how you can get involved."
