Based on Tré’s earlier Medium article, this talk extends his work into thinking about horror storytelling as a vehicle for education on the links between Britain’s rural country estates and the Atlantic Slave Trade. Intertwining his childhood in rural England with histories of empire and his family history, Tré makes thecase that horror could be used to better articulate that history in a time where traditional costume dramas(i.e. Jane Austen) have committed to a violent coup de brainwashing! For those interested in media, heritage, and history- or are just interested, ‘Get Out of Midsomer’ is a mixture of evidence and spectuations that encourages us to think how horror could be used as device to critique racist mythmaking amid Britain’s constant culture wars. Part memoir, part scholarship, and part speculation, this paper makes us think about the ghosts of empire that live on country estates further reframing decentring the Black trauma of slave trade films offering up horror as a conduit into colonial histories of white people. In this talk, Tré will engage with texts including Doctor Who, Brönte’s Wuthering Heights and Jordan Peele’scritically acclaimed Get Out.
