About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Set sail with author and campaigner Graeme Smith on the story of Glasgow Harbour. Extending from Glasgow Green to Clydebank, developing 12 miles of modern quays and 500 miles of railways, Glasgow became the greatest sea port in Scotland. And the world centre of shipbuilding. The docks were the busiest and most important in the UK throughout WWII.

The new illustrated book Glasgow Harbour is being published by Amberley on April 15th; following the success of Graeme’s book about Glasgow’s Blythswood.

Experience this fascinating talk by Graeme, accompanied by the photography of Mike McCreery, in the spacious Blythswood Hall of Renfield Centre, in partnership with the Old Glasgow Club.

Free event. Tickets can be acquired here or at the door. You also have the option to make a donation of any amount to the charity (Registered charity Renfield Centre SC022996).

An important aspect of our work is helping people who face barriers accessing experiences and participation in the arts, by providing free and affordable tickets, as well as engaging people through resident organisations and groups at the Centre. We also work with arts and cultural organisations to provide discounted rates which enable them to deliver inspirational performances in the Renfield Centre's 200-capacity venues. Government arts arm’s-length bodies indicate that the diversity of arts audiences is very low in comparison with the national population. Funding cuts, venue closures and rising costs are preventing smaller but vital arts organisations and emerging artists from presenting work for the public. This harms audience development, decreases the number of platforms available to showcase up-and-coming talent and negatively impacts the talent pipeline. Smaller-scale city-centre venues like ours want to do our part to support organisations and artists during an extremely challenging time for the creative sector. We want to make sure that people from diverse backgrounds have the opportunity to benefit from enrichment and enjoyment derived from engagement with music and arts.
