Join the southern heathlands ranger team for a guided walk and to help survey numbers of Glow worms present at Highgate Common, a site of special scientific interest for the solitary bees and wasps and other invertebrates that live here. We will have the opportunity to possibly see other nocturnal wildlife that make Highgate common their home - roding woodcock, bats and great crested newts in one of the ponds.
Glow worms are actually beetles, despite 'worm' in the name. In the UK, adult glow worms are active between May and September, usually with a peak of activity in June and July. It is the female of the species that glows to attract males for mating.
Glow worms are usually found in locations where there is a good supply of small snails for larvae to feed on.

Sturdy footwear is a must, and please dress accordingly as it gets chilly when it gets dark.
Walkers must be fit and able to walk for about an hour and a half, through vegetation. Please bring a torch but for the most part we will be using our eyes to navigate so eat plenty of carrots! There will be no refreshments available, so please also bring a drink with you.
