Overview

North York Moors National Park | 9.5 Miles (15.3km) | Approx. 6–7 Hours | Elevation Gain: ~471m

Grade: Moderate

Join us for a scenic journey through one of the most iconic corners of the North York Moors National Park.

Starting in Grosmont, home to the famous North Yorkshire Moors Railway and its historic steam trains, this route combines peaceful woodland trails, riverside paths, charming villages and expansive moorland views into one unforgettable day outdoors.

We'll begin by following sections of the Rail Trail through shady woodland alongside the River Esk before arriving in the picturesque village of Goathland for lunch.

Many visitors will recognise Goathland as the filming location for the long-running television series Heartbeat, and the village retains much of its traditional Yorkshire character. Expect stone cottages, quaint shops and perhaps even a few sheep wandering freely through the village.

After lunch, the landscape opens up as we make our way onto the heather moorland that makes the North York Moors so special. Here, wide-open views and rolling purple hills provide a spectacular backdrop for the second half of the walk.

While this hike is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness, participants should expect a full day outdoors, steady climbs and several hours on their feet.

As always, our hikes are fully guided, inclusive and open to anyone looking to experience the outdoors in a welcoming and supportive environment.
