Green Carnation Film Club Presents... DANTE'S INFERNO (1967)
Green Carnation returns with a deep cut from the great Ken Russell's filmography. Dante's Inferno (1967) is a biopic of the Pre-Raphaelite artist, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and charts his relationship with his fellow artist, muse and wife Elizabeth Siddal.A psychedelic, chaotic trip in Victorian debauchery, this film captures the wild spirit of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and doesn't shy away from exposing the chauvinism driving the bad boys of their era.
Whether you're a Victoriana devotee or a complete novice, you'll enjoy this evening of opium-drenched ravings and melodramatic romance.
This screening will feature an introduction by art historian and expert on the Pre-Raphaelite Movement, Thomas Dunwell. Thomas is completing his PhD at the University of Leeds and recently lectured on primitivism in the work of Gauguin for the V&A.
