Join our tutor, Jo, for this sewing workshop, where creativity meets geography!
Flight Path: World Map Tapestry on Saturday 26th April, 10am - 2pm with lunchtime treats provided.

In this fun and relaxed workshop, you will join other sewing enthusiasts to contribute to a world map tapestry which will be displayed in the Learning Centre as a legacy piece for our Flight Path project.
Under Jo's direction, you'll get to experiment with vibrant fabrics, and get tips on design placement to make your tapestry truly one-of-a-kind. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to meet fellow crafting enthusiasts and share ideas.

This will be the last of our two World Map sessions - between these two sessions, we have been running 2-hour workshops where partcipants have created felt birds to be placed on the map.
Once these workshops are complete, the second World Map Tapestry session will be to complete the map, and (if there's time) finish the binding and aesthetics. Jo will then take it away to complete by placing the felt birds and mark their migratory paths with golden threads onto the map.

So grab your fabric scissors and let’s get sewing!

The idea of the World Map is to show birds and their migratory paths; however, the map will also show the colours of the warmer and wetter parts of the world in order to highlight areas where Climate Change is affecting our feathered friends and their habits.

ABOUT FLIGHT PATH:

Through a combination of creative writing workshops, lectures, immersive walks and various mediums of art, we hope to raise awareness and a comprehensive understanding of how climate change is altering the behaviour and distribution of bird species worldwide.

This funding completed on March 31st 2025.

ABOUT THE FUNDER

Lairg and District Learning Centre, along with 8 other centres throughout Scotland, are delighted to have been awarded a grant from the Scottish Government's £272k Climate Engagement Fund (CEF).

The fund has been set up to increase Climate Change awareness and action in local communities through various activities such as community workshops, podcasts and green festivals, which will be supported from the latest round of Scottish Government funding.
