About this event

Part of Theatreship's guest nights - where contemporary artists take over the ship to highlight the stories they want to tell.

Here's some more info about the piece from the creatives involved:

Synopsis:
Bags packed, ready to leave for a new country and a new home, Priya finds herself following in the footsteps of her grandfather, Ram. Nervous to begin the journey, Priya starts to pry out the old stories of an Indian man forging his way through 1950s England. They reminisce of the sights, sounds, and smells of a different time. With each tale, the shell around her grandfather peels back and together they peer into the joys and adversities of finding yourself far from your homeland.

Bios:
Kaustubh Jalundhwala is a playwright from London. Oceans Apart is inspired by the life of his late great uncle, Dr. Melattur Kalyanram. His work frequently weaves together storytelling and movement to address the complexities of identity and relationships. His adaptation of The Time Machine was performed to acclaim at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The Bookshop, currently in development, explores the place and significance that stories have in our lives.

Olivia Krauze is a theatre director from London and Artistic Director of AKRO Theatre. Recent directing credits include I was in the house and I was waiting for the rain to come (Barons Court Theatre, 2024) and Heart of a Dog (Camden People’s Theatre, 2024); as movement director, Macbeth (The Round Church, 2024) and The Seagull (ADC Theatre, 2023).

Theatreship is committed to broadening access to the arts - we know that ticket price is a huge barrier for some. If the regular ticket price is beyond what you feel able to afford for whatever reason, please don't hesitate to email us at tickets@theatreship.co.uk and we will do everything we can to help, no questions asked.

We also offer arts supporter tickets, for those that can, to pay a higher price to support the venue, the artists who perform here and subsidised tickets for others.

Due to the historic nature of the ship, we’re sorry to say there is not currently step-free access into the theatre space. We have dedicated staff on hand to help with stairs, and an onsite wheelchair once you’re inside the venue. If you have any access needs, please do e-mail us at access@theatreship.co.uk.
