About this event
After leaving Abbey Wood station, we'll begin our walk at a12-century abbey and woods, then we'll explore the famous 1960s estate which is having a renaissance, including along the lake and by the wild horses, before moving on towards the Thames Path, for a breezy walk along the river, walking between two Elizabeth line stations.
This is a walk full of contrast, retro city vibes, ancient abbey ruins, new developments, wildlife, open green spaces and a quiet river trail to complete the route.
This is a refreshing walk that packs a lot in and is certainly one of my favourite walks after first discovering the area a decade ago when I was completing the Thames Path. I always find it neat that you pass through Woolwich to get to Abbey Wood, then the walk takes us back to Woolwich on foot, which is quite satisfying, plus one less stop traveling back on the train.
Meet at Abbey Wood station, which is easily accessible on the Elizabeth line, in Zone 4 (see below for more details), upstairs by the bookcase inside the ticket barriers. The walk finishes outside the Woolwich Elizabeth line station.
Frequently asked questions
Very easy on the Elizabeth Line with connections from central London taking 35 minutes. Abbey Wood is at the end of the central section; just make sure the train is going via Canary Wharf, change at Whitechapel if needed for a train to Abbey Wood before the route splits to Shenfield via Stratford.
No, the Elizabeth line, as well as most of the TFL network, accepts contactless pay as you go tap-in and tap-out payments. Just remember to use the same contactless payment method throughout the day to get the best price.
Yes, the Elizabeth Line is quite fast but like any transport, there can be delays, though I have generally not had issues, especially travelling off-peak, but it is a good idea to give yourself extra time especially for a route you might not be familiar with.
The walk is approximately 10.5km but I find the walk goes quickly, and I always get a lot from it, whatever my energy levels are, but wearing appropriate footwear is recommended.
Not many no, toilets are available at Abbey Wood station along with a shop, also on route, there are toilets at the abbey but afterwards very little is available. Bring refreshments with you perhaps, a packed lunch etc, as needed.
