With its impressive steep, craggy mountains, Glencoe is one of the best places for scrambling in Scotland. It is home to bucket-list routes like the Aonach Eagach Ridge (grade 2) and Curved Ridge (grade 3). However, there is also plenty of easier scrambling in the glen and several superbly positioned grade 1 routes ideal for beginners to get to grips with!
This developer course is suitable for hillwalkers and sky/mountain runners* who are looking to try scrambling for the first time or improve their confidence over graded terrain.
Day 1 will focus on essential movement skills (scrambling up and down-climbing technique). This will be on grade 0-1 terrain without the use of a harness or rope. We will also cover how to planning your route and choose the appropriate scramble (including scrambling grades and what they mean).
Day 2 will involve some tricker graded 1-2 scrambling (depending on the weather and group). We will cover route-finding, managing exposure and making sound judgements around weather and safety. On this day you may be required to wear a harness (at the discretion of your instructor). On both days you will be required to wear a helmet.
Over the weekend, you will be instructed by Girls on Hills guide/s with the necessary Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor qualification (MCI) required to properly manage your safety on scrambling terrain in the mountains. The ratio will be no more than 1 to 6 (or 1 to 3 roped), with plenty of experience on-hand to help you where you need it. Selected routes will be in the Glencoe/Lochaber area.
Participants should have a good level of hill fitness and a 'head for heights’ (i.e. not suffer from vertigo). If you’re not sure then please just drop us an email and ask!
