About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Audience Level: Intermediate

You should have a good understanding of the basics of Python, at least as far as taught in the Introduction to Python 1 course. Ideal for participants who have a foundational understanding and are looking to expand their skills.

Session Information:

This course is an introduction on how to perform useful data analysis tasks in Python. It will focus primarily on modules pandas and seaborn to query, combine and visualise data. It will also introduce Jupyter Notebooks as a way of interweaving prose with your code, as a form of 'literate programming'.

The course materials are available at https://bristol-training.github.io/introduction-to-data-analysis-in-python/

Action required before the session:

Please bring along your own laptop with a working Python installation, including pandas and seaborn libraries. We also recommend you having Jupyter Notebooks. If you don’t have Python on your laptop, we recommend installing it via Anaconda following these instructions(this will also install Jupyter).

We are running an in-person and online JGI drop-in installation session on Friday 30th May from 11:30-12:45. If you require any help in installing any software please attend this session.

Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • Know how to use Jupyter Notebooks.
  • Be familiar with pandas and seaborn.
  • Know how to read a data file and deal with format issues.
  • Have the skills to create a simple plot to visualize and explore your data.
