About this event

  • Event lasts 7 hours 30 minutes

Yorkshire’s dry stone walls are an important and iconic part of our heritage. They also provide vital homes for wildlife and form robust boundaries for our livestock. Sadly, many of our dry stone walls are falling into disrepair as the traditional skills needed to maintain them are being lost. Join us on this event to learn more about this ancient craft and have a go at adding ‘another stone in the wall’ to restore a broken-down section.

Embrace your wild side - what to expect:

Wide-ranging vistas, the hills, the ancient folly of Castle Hill, and lush green meadows; the aroma of wildflowers, and the buzz of bees - welcome to Stirley.

What to bring/wear

Brace yourself for the changeable Yorkshire weather! Layers, suncream, hats and raincoats are recommended.

You will also need a packed lunch and snacks to keep your energy levels up. Bring extra refreshments to stay hydrated but we do have a kettle for hot drinks.

Toilets and catering

There is an accessible toilet at Stirley, as well as an events toilet trailer.

Parking

Parking is free at Stirley. Please note that during larger events there is limited parking available closest to the barn, which is prioritised for people requiring accessible spaces.

Upon arrival, you will be guided to our events field parking which is a short five-minute walk to Stirley barns.

Directions

If you’re using a satnav or navigational app such as Google Maps then we recommend you avoid setting directions to ‘Stirley’ as this route may take you down a narrow track which is unsuitable for vehicles.

We advise setting directions to ‘Hall Bower Lane’ or postcode ‘HD4 6RW’.

If you are descending from the High Lane direction then continue past the housing on Hall Bower Lane and, when you reach the bend, the turning for Stirley will be on your left hand side.

If you are arriving from the Lady House Lane direction, the turning for Stirley will be on your right hand side as the bend in the road meets Hall Bower Lane.
