Learning Objectives:

The course will introduce you to project economics, providing you with the knowledge, language and tools to improve your commercial business awareness and to sharpen your focus on value creation. The course will enable you to:

  • Engage with decision makers using their language
  • Calculate the profitability of a project with confidence
  • Calculate and understand the role of taxation


Course Content:

The learning objectives will be achieved through a modular course structure combining theory with hands-on worked examples and quizzes. You will receive course slides and useful worked example Excel templates. The examples include assessment of the business returns offered by typical project investments. The modules include, but are not limited to:

  • Inflation, Money of the Day, and Real Terms money
  • The time value of money, risk and discounting
  • Discounted cash flows and NPV
  • Economic metrics (NPV, DPI, IRR, exposure, payback time and more)
  • UK tax regime
  • Decommissioning and end of project life economics
  • Sensitivity analysis
  • Decision trees
  • Cost benefit analysis
  • Value of information


Who Should Attend:

Those working in developer companies or engineering and consultancy companies who wish to have a stronger impact on business. The course has previously been completed by professionals working in engineering, management, tax, finance, commercial, sales and science roles.


Instructor:

The course will be presented by Richard Woodhouse who has 28 years’ experience in the energy sector combining process engineering and project economics roles. Richard spent eight years at Shell where he was the economist for a number of assets prior to leading a large economics team

providing senior management with decision support for all of the Shell operated assets in Europe. Richard is a Director at Dundas and is very active in project economics and engineering consultancy.
