About this event

Introduction to Inquests

LAG’s annual Introduction to Inquests training is designed to provide delegates with the essential knowledge and skills required to navigate the inquest process with confidence. This full day, in person training will be delivered by John Hobson, Shanthi Sivakumaran, Michael Spencer, Ruby Peacock and Rachel Woodward from Doughty Street Chambers. Introduction to Inquests covers key topics to support legal practitioners and other professionals involved in inquests to deepen their understanding of this complex system.

You'll learn about important materials like laws and guidance from the chief coroner. The course gives an overview of the investigative process, including how inquest hearings are structured. It covers pre-inquest hearings, submissions, and questioning. You'll also learn about specific types of inquests, such as prison deaths, deaths in mental health detention and hospital deaths. Case studies will provide practical examples to help improve your skills. The training includes guidance on reaching conclusions, PFD reports, civil claims, and funding options.

Join us at our Introduction to Inquests training to equip yourself with the knowledge and skills to make an impact, learn practical tips, continue your professional development and connect with fellow professionals in the field.

Delegates also have the opportunity to purchase Inquests: a practitioner’s guide at an exclusive discounted rate. This guide seeks to assist legal practitioners in promoting the rights of bereaved people who become involved in inquests. It is uniquely focused on examining the practice and procedure of the coroner’s court from the point of view of practitioner acting for the bereaved.
