Makaton Signing for Babies

Makaton Signing for Babies (MSBF) is for parents, family members or carers who would like to sign or use Makaton symbols with babies and young children in their care and have no previous experience of Makaton. These fun and interactive sessions are designed for you and your child to have fun, bond and learn together.

Content

During this course you will learn around 100 signs/symbols to help in the development of communication and language skills in babies and toddlers. Topics include: saying hello, eating and drinking, asking for help, going out and using Makaton in play. You will also learn signing hints and tips for effective communication. The session material is delivered in a variety of different ways often through songs, stories and games/activities.

Duration

The course is 5 x 1 hour sessions, face to face in the Children Centre. It is important that you attend the complete course to gain the most out of the group. Unfortunately we are unable to offer out places once the course has started so please check dates before confirming you would like to attend. It is preferable that the same parent/carer attends each week to build on their knowledge/skills. We have a very limited number of places available per group and will run a waiting list. (we ask that older toddlers are not brought to sessions designed for younger babies).

Costs

This course is free as it is fully subsidised by Bedford Borough Council however normally costs £60 per person.

Accessibility

Please indicate if you have any challenges or additional needs, so reasonable adjustments can be made to support your learning and participation. You MUST book your own place, and cannot book for others as we need individual details to ensure we can make contact before the course.

Entry criteria

No previous experience of Makaton is necessary, just enthusiasm to try out the signs with your child, as well a participating in the songs and activities within the group. If you have previously attended the course, you cannot attend again.

Study materials

A padlet has been created for participants attending, which you will receive prior to starting. This includes information about the sign/symbols taught, the songs, books and activities used as well as other useful websites. At the end of the course you will also receive a Makaton Signing for Babies and Families Pocket Book which has the signs and symbols you have learned during the sessions. You will be given a certificate of attendance.
