In this 'small group' day, I will give step by step guidance of hand building techniques, using coiling or slabs for you to create your own unique table lamp base. We will consider design needs for both creating a stable lamp and for access for wiring, and in the afternoon you can decorate your base with slips and oxides.
The session is suitable for those with and without experience of working with clay. You can search online for 'ceramic/pottery lampbases' for inspiration (my lamps are more sculptural so a little more challenging to wire up, so the images I have used here as examples are from various online search sources, both modern & vintage)
Apart from the lamp mechanism & shade, all materials and tools will be provided and the Kiln-firing & finish materials are included in the fee, all you need is to wear old clothes (do bring apron)
You can order & pay for lamp kits (which include instructions) at the session for £25 ( black cord/bronze holder or gold cord & gold holder) or I can give you information about where to order them yourself (I will demonstrate fitting in the session with a pre-fired lampbase).
The bases can be around 20 - 30 cm high depending on your preferred design. You can bring a shade with you , or wait until you have the finished item before purchasing a suitable shade.
Depending on your choice of decoration, some people will complete their project earlier than others, but I'm allowing for ending at around 4.30 for those using the colourful underglazes that need several coats and to dry between coats.
At the end of the session your lampbase will be :
- Taken back to my studio to be dried ( +/- 4/7 days)
- Fired in a kiln 'bisque' firing (24 hours)
- Final glaze finish, where required, applied by me (samples will be available for your to choose )
- Fired again for the 24 hour 'finish' firing.
Overall the process takes approx 2 -3 weeks.
Your lampbase will be available for collection later at my studio to be arranged with you . (If you need it to be posted, this will be at extra cost, and must be discussed at the start of the session so we can consider any particular design elements that may not survive being posting)
