About this event

  • Event lasts 6 hours

Did you know there were 6 Chinese survivors on the Titanic?

Join us in the basement of SEESAW on 24th May 2025 for ECHO (ESEA Collective: History, Over here)! We aim to uncover and retell the stories of these men - originally eight of them - whose lives were changed forever aboard one of the worst and most famous ocean-bound disasters of all time. And whose lives were mostly forgotten. Until recently.

The nine Asian passengers - including one Japanese man - faced persecution and vilification, simply for being men and people of colour who had somehow been on board when fellow passengers, the press and the public think they shouldn't have and survived instead of others.

But beyond their treatment and their lives before and after the Titanic, we look at how perceptions of them and laws against Asian people at the time shaped other key moments within British history. From the repatriation of Chinese seamen following both World Wars to the journeys of Vietnamese refugees and from the stateless Malaysian nationals to the experiences of Filipino domestic workers, we will showcase some intriguing yet often forgotten stories from different British ESEA communities.

Please see the agenda for more information. All tickets come with online access to the online Q&A with the author and director of "The Six" book and documentary research team on 2nd May.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Frequently asked questions

What is ECHO?

ECHO (ESEA Collective: History, Over here) is Voice ESEA's annual history exhibition. In uncovering hidden British history, we aim to enable safe conversations around belonging. Our May date commemorates the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act- and serves as a reminder: history really wasn't so long ago.

How accessible is the venue?

The basement is accessible only by a lift in the foyer of the building.

Do you offer refunds?

We are happy to refund tickets no later than 24 hours before 10am 24th May (we can't refund Eventbrite's booking fee). However, we do ask that you consider still donating the cost towards us as a non-profit group so that we can keep hosting this exhibition every year.

Part of the event takes place during lunch. Can we bring our own food?

Yes. We will provide some light snacks and you are welcome to bring your own food in (there are eateries and shops very close by). You may also purchase hot, cold and soft drinks and some food in the SEESAW Café on the ground floor.

Is this event suitable for children?

Yes, supervised children are welcome to come along and learn!
