Rarity love to showcase the best of what Scotland has to offer. We are delighted to welcome North Uist Distillery & Downpour Gin for a tasting on the 30th May.
North Uist Distillery was founded in 2019 by Kate Macdonald and Jonny Ingledew, both natives of North Uist in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. Their goal was to establish a vibrant distillery that honors the island's rich traditions while introducing new employment opportunities and reviving whisky production in their homeland.
The distillery is situated at the historic Nunton Steadings on Benbecula, a site that holds significant meaning for many islanders. Kate and Jonny are committed to maintaining the site's legacy and sharing their journey through their "Island Dispatch" newsletter, offering insights into both distillery activities and island life.
In December 2024, North Uist Distillery produced its first new make spirit, marking a significant milestone in their whisky production journey. This whisky is crafted using bere barley, a heritage grain that has flourished in the Outer Hebrides for centuries. The distillery employs traditional methods, including seaweed fertilization by local crofters, to ensure a sustainable and authentic product.
Beyond whisky, the distillery offers the Downpour gin range, which they will be showcasing at this tasting and which has garnered multiple awards, including Scottish Gin Distillery of the Year in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
