About this event

Please join us on Friday 19th September at The Studio in Birmingham for our annual healthy ageing conference.

As always we have a great line-up of leading academics, scientists, experts and influencers sharing tips on how to live well and promote healthy and successful ageing.

This is a fantastic opportunity to ask questions from experts in the field of healthy ageing and enjoy meeting and networking with like-minded people, all working together to reimagine and transform the way we age.

We’re delighted to be joined by:

Tony Watts OBE – Adding life to your years

Tony has been writing and campaigning in the later life zone for over 35 years, including editing the UK’s first national newspaper for older people and representing older people in Government in a number of roles. His passion is trying to persuade decision-makers to view the challenges and opportunities of our ageing society holistically – “joining the dots” between health, care, isolation and housing, and between later life employment, pensions and poverty – and he runs the 200-strong Age Action Alliance as a collaborative, knowledge-sharing network.

In 2014 he received an OBE for his services to older people.

Suzanne Vernazza – Pelvic Health for All: Making the Unspoken Mainstream

Pelvic health is often overlooked, yet it’s essential for overall well-being at every stage of life. NHS Clinical Specialist Pelvic Health Physiotherapist Suzanne Vernazza is on a mission to change that! In this session, Suzanne will break down what everyone should know about pelvic health and share practical ways to prevent and improve common issues such as incontinence, prolapse, and pelvic pain. Whether for yourself or those you support, this talk will equip you with valuable knowledge to help more people move and live with confidence.

Professor Anna Whittaker – Unlocking the Physical and Psychological Benefits of Movement

Professor Anna Whittaker is a Professor of Behavioural Medicine in Sport at the University of Stirling. Join us for an insightful talk exploring the key physical and psychological benefits of physical activity in later life. Drawing on recent research, particularly studies conducted in care homes, she will delve into the impact of resistance training and other forms of physical activity on the physical, social, and psychological well-being of older adults. She will also examine the role of technology in promoting physical activity for ageing populations.

Professor Paul Greenhaff – Muscles, metabolism and medication: strategies for staying stronger for longer

Paul Greenhaff is a professor at the University of Nottingham, where he works in the Division of Physiology, Pharmacology, and Neuroscience. He also serves as the Director of the Medical Research Council (MRC)-Versus Arthritis Centre for Musculoskeletal Ageing Research and Deputy Director of the Centre for Sport, Exercise, and Osteoarthritis Research. In addition, Paul actively contributes to Nottingham’s National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre.Paul’s research focuses on understanding the loss of muscle mass and the disruption of metabolism that can occur with ageing, immobility, inactivity, injury, and chronic diseases. He explores strategies to counter these effects, such as exercise, nutrition, and medication interventions. With over 200 peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters, and musculoskeletal-related patents filed by the University of Nottingham, Paul is a leading expert in his field.
