About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours 30 minutes

Rachel Martin has recently qualified having studied with IPCAPA . She works for the NHS in a Child & Adolescent Mental Health Clinic in the Wiltshire area. Her presentation describes work with a ‘spirited and playful’ 5-year-old.

“It not only considers Mae’s therapy journey, but also captures something of mine; from my beginnings, feeling apprehensive about how to engage with such a young patient, towards embracing both the permission to play and my own enjoyment of playing. The joy of playing together has enriched my understanding of the Winnicottian ‘overlap’ of these ‘two areas of playing’.”

The work offers an opportunity to hear about the process of psychoanalytic psychotherapy with a young child which is particularly influenced by the work of Winnicott and Anna Freud.

The paper also takes us further into thinking about the processes involved in training for this work - the role not only of theory and technique, but also of the nature of supervision and personal development in training.

This will be an important opportunity to bring together trainees and trainers to consider the nature of the learning environment in psychoanalytic work.

Squiggle events are Public Lectures and this is also an opportunity for practitioners from other fields and the general public to hear about this work.
