About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 45 minutes

Our visit to Parcevall Hall Gardens will be our second visit this year to a garden created in the inter-war years. Sir William Milner, architect, plantsman and horticulturalist, purchased the derelict Parcevall Hall in 1927 and transformed the agricultural landscape of a steep Dales valley into 24 acres of woodland and formal gardens. He created terraced compartments, a rose garden, a rock Garden and added woodland to an otherwise almost treeless landscape - his close associates included Hon. Robert James of St. Nicholas, Richmond and Major Lawrence Johnson who laid out Hidcote in Gloucestershire. As a keen plantsman he received trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants collected from remote corners of the world, by George Forrest in Western China and Tibet, and from Lord Grey of Howick and J.C.Williams of Caerhays in Cornwall. Sir William became a founder member of the Northern Horticulture Society which established the gardens at Harlow Carr near Harrogate, now RHS Harlow Carr.

There will be a shorter garden tour for those who find steep steps difficult as well as a longer tour which will include the whole garden.

Please meet at 10.45 for an 11.00 start. The garden shuts at 6.00pm

Every year we organise a varied programme of events aimed at improving our knowledge and enjoyment of designed landscapes, parks and gardens. Our visits are usually led by owners, head gardeners and researchers. We also arrange study days and lectures, both in person and by zoom.

Members and non-members are welcome. For popular events, and for those limited by numbers, priority will be given to members. See website, or contact events@yorkshiregardenstrust.org.uk, for more information.

We aim to maintain ticket costs at a reasonable level to ensure that our events are accessible. We include some element of fund raising in some of our visit prices to support our Small Grants, Bursary and Schools programmes.
