Plant your own poem by writing on seed paper and planting it in compost at this family-friendly poetry workshop with professional poet Emilie Lauren Jones. The perfect way to celebrate the Unearthed: The Power of Garden exhibition which will be travelling around our libraries this year.
Join Emilie at Leamington Library between 2 and 5pm on Wednesday 20th August where she will guide you through the process of crafting your very own poem, encouraging you to draw inspiration from nature and gardens. Once your poem is complete, you will write it onto special seeded paper, which is embedded with wildflower seeds. Younger attendees are welcome to get creative with drawings and scribbles on their seed paper instead! Emilie will then show you how to plant the paper into compost, explaining how your words will transform into beautiful wildflowers over time. You will then be able to take your poem home and watch with anticipation as your words bloom!
Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to write a line of poetry on a leaf. Emilie will collect these leaves and compile them into a community poem, which will be put on display in the library.
No need to book a place, just drop in!
This workshop is suitable for all ages, but children under 16 will need to be supervised by an adult.
About Emilie Lauren Jones
Emilie Lauren Jones has performed across the UK and internationally. In 2021, the year Coventry became UK City of Culture, she became the city's first Poet Laureate. Her debut children's poetry book, An A to Z of Awesome Animals was released in October 2023. Emilie's poetry has been featured on local and national radio, including BBC Radio 3, 4, 5Live and 6 Music and on national television including Sky Arts and BBC4. She has performed alongside poets such as Simon Armitage, Roy McFarlane and Hollie McNish.
She enjoys writing bespoke personalised poems to help people celebrate special occasions or to celebrate someone's life through poetry. Her words have helped mark people's birthdays, anniversaries and been included in many funeral services and weddings.
As well as writing poetry for individuals, she continues to be commissioned by some really interesting places and organisations including universities, historical buildings, and even a Victorian graveyard! She has also worked as a 'Poet in Residence' at several conferences both online and in person to create bespoke poems based on conversations throughout the event culminating in an inspiring performance for attendees.
She facilitates writing workshops for adults and young people, and also enjoys visiting schools, care homes, community groups (and anywhere else!) to share her love of words. She has delivered sessions in person and online internationally for a variety of organisations including NAWG, Arvon, Writing West Midlands, Positive Images Festival, Wilderness Festival, BBC, Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Apples and Snakes, and more!
