Germany is the largest and most important member-state of the EU, and since the end of the Second World War in 1945, it has established itself as one of the most successful and stable democracies in the world. But as in other European countries, Germany’s political system is under pressure, both domestically and in terms of its position in the world. Through the lens of rehabilitation, consensus and transformation, as three key themes of German politics, this lecture unpacks how and why this pressure is playing out, and what it means for Germany’s future.
