About this event

Step into the world of Rebetika with three of Greece’s finest musicians—Fotis Vergopoulos, Avgerini Gatsi, and Kostis Kostakis (members of

Rebetiko band Rebeti)—joined by London-based singer Andria Antoniou. Together, they bring the timeless sounds of the Gramophone era

into the present, touching upon the rich discography of Rebetika while weaving in their own music and works by contemporary artists. A

musical journey through the old and the new, where tradition meets fresh expression.

Fotis Vergopoulos, born in Melbourne in 1988, moved to Koroni, Greece as a child. Inspired by his father, a member of Apodimi Kompania,

Fotis began his musical journey at age 6. After completing his Civil Engineering degree, he returned to Melbourne, performing at various

festivals, including the Brunswick and Port Fairy Folk Festivals. Since 2012, he’s been active in Athens, collaborating with artists like Babis

Goles, Agathon Iakovidis, and Dimitra Galani.

Kostis Kostakis, born in Athens in 1986, was classically trained before switching to electric and lap steel guitar. He performed with the

rebetiko band HiPsi from 2005 to 2011, studying the great rebetiko guitarists. Since 2011, he’s played with several bands, including

Elektrobalkana and Rebetien, and collaborated with artists like Babis Gkoles, Haig Yazdjian, and Dimitris Mitsotakis.

Avgerini Gatsi, born in 1989 in Athens, studied Byzantine and European music, ney, bağlama saz, and piano at Pallini Music High School.

She furthered her studies in makam theory and ney at the Athens Conservatory and Labyrinth Musical Workshop. A member of Rebetien

since 2012, she teaches Greek folk and rebetiko singing in Greece, Europe, and Australia.

Andria Antoniou, a London-based vocalist, collaborates with Latin jazz, Greek, and musical theatre artists like George Hatzinasios, Omar

Puente, and Mario Bakuna. She has performed at venues such as Union Chapel London and Teatro Colón de Bogotá. Andria’s debut album

Encuentro with Roman Gomez earned second place at the LUKAS 2019 awards. She also founded the Greek-Latin fusion band Babesa

Cubana.
