Evening Cruise on MS Oldenburg
Following the popularity of the evening cruise on the MS Oldenburg last year, RNLI Appledore Guild has arranged for the Lundy Landmark Trust and the MS Oldenburg to organise a further summer evening cruise in support of Appledore Lifeboat and the RNLI, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Appledore Lifeboat.
There will be live music, a licensed bar and a very special RNLI atmosphere.
Passengers joining the evening cruise should dress for the weather on the day and remember it can cool down quickly when sun sets out on the water. All drinks must be purchased from the bar but passengers may bring their own picnics. All proceeds from the evening will help support the RNLI.
Following Sir William Hillary’s inaugural meeting of the Institution in1824, 12 lifeboats were ordered to be built by William Plenty of Newbury. Sir Charles Chalmers formed the Bideford Branch Association and successfully appealed to the Institution for one of the first lifeboats to be stationed at Appledore. On 28th February 1825 the first lifeboat to be built arrived in Appledore. The boat was named the Volunteer, it was 18 foot long, weighed one ton and was pulled by four oarsmen.
The MS Oldenburg was launched on 29 March 1958 to serve as a ferry to the Frisian Islands, Germany. The ship was sold to the Lundy Co in 1985, it was refurbished at Appledore Shipbuilders and has since provided a regular summer service from Bideford and Ilfracombe to Lundy.
