About this event

Please wear closed in footwear to attend this course

This year’s FNHC Moving & Handling update concentrates on:

  • safely assisting a person to sit, stand, walk, transfer and reposition in the chair,
  • discussing the actions to be taken when dealing with a falling, fallen or collapsed person.

Why should they attend?

To provide employees with adequate information, instruction and training to understand the principles of safe moving and handling. To ensure their own health, safety and welfare and prevent harm to others in relation to safe moving and handling of a person .

What skills would they take away?

By the end of the session the learner will be able to:

  • state how a person would usually stand, sit, walk, transfer and re-position in a chair, and how this information can be used when assisting them to move
  • Identify unsafe practices, and explain why these should not be used
  • state factors to be considered in assessing a person’s ability to stand, sit, transfer, walk, or reposition in the chair, and how the information is recorded
  • demonstrate and practice in assisting a person to:
    - move forward and back in the chair
    - stand to sit/sit to stand
    - walk
    - transfer from one surface to another while standing without equipment
    - seated transfer with equipment
    - seated transfer without equipment
    - standing transfer with equipment
  • demonstrate and practice:
    - raising a fallen person with minimal assistance, e.g., encouragement/use of chair.
-moving a fallen person from a confined space

Why should you pay?

Safe moving and handling is not an additional aspect of healthcare practice that a healthcare practitioner may choose whether to do or not. It is an essential integral mandatory element of health care practice.
The knowledge and skills that are delivered and reinforced during the course are designed to improve your skills in safe moving and handling of a person in the community
Discussing and identifying unsafe practices will increase the learner’s confidence to challenge such practice. This may help prevent harm to the patient, health care practitioner and safeguard the care provider.
Legislation will be reinforced to impress the importance of accountability.

What are the smart learning outcomes for the course?

Measurable – Skills gained may be built upon existing knowledge and further knowledge on future courses. Attendance of Safe moving and handing Updates together with a full day Safe Moving and Handling will lead to a passport for Safe Moving and Handling.

Achievable – Group work with practical aspect throughout
